December 1950 – Joanna and Larry

Wednesday 6 P.M.
Dear Larry,
We just finished supper and I got the dishes washed. We had vegetable soup, hot dogs and cherry pie for supper. I baked two cherry pies and I told the kids that if you were home they would both be gone, but now it looks like we may have pie for dessert tomorrow night too (that is if Karl doesn’t eat it up before the night is over).
Well, Larry, we got your letter today and, as you know, we were glad to hear from you.
Dad is asleep on the rocker and Joanna is asleep also. Tresa is down [at] Debby’s and Karl is out playing ball, while Carol is collecting. She is thinking about [quitting] the paper route for she thinks she is getting older and it embarrasses her. If she ever gives it up then Tresa will have to take over and help Karl.
Larry, Joanna and Some Other Girl
This picture is funny. To the left is Larry and on the right is Joanna. In the middle is someone who we don’t know. Maybe someone else in the family can identify her. There was no date on this photo so we can only assume that Larry is about 3-5 years old and that this was taken in the early 1950′s. It looks like they are hanging around some other people who are doing some sort of construction as far as we can tell by the ladder in the background.
Edit: “I’m pretty sure the girl in the middle is our first cousin, Vicki. In the letters, she is the one that is dating Bill that is also in the army. Just a guess, but they may be standing by where our big house was being built, while they lived in the little house which is now the garage.” – Tresa

Easter Sunday
10 A.M.
Dear Larry:
Well, here it is Easter Sunday and as of yet we have not gone to church. We are going to the 11:30 mass because Karl has to serve. So I thought I would start a letter to you and if I don’t have time to finish it, I would write later. Tresa, Carol and Karl all got Easter outfits, I got a new hat, Dad is the same ole Dad, he wears the same thing over and over. Ha. And as for Joanna, she had to be at work at 8 this morning and is supposed to go to St. Mary’s Church at lunch time. I sure hope that you found time to go to church or did you go to that Easter Pageant that I wrote you about?

Wed. evening
Larry,
Hi! How are ya? Just got through painting 4 pictures of mother. I think it insulted her. Well, I better go.
Carol
Dear Larry:
I didn’t want to waste this space so I thought I would finish Carol’s long letter, I just can’t get those big cobelas Joanna and Carol to write to you. (Big cobela mother sure writes to you. – Carol)
Joanna is too damn busy running around and Carol is too busy enjoying her spring break and Dad is too busy going to the Polish Club or his church (as you would say) and Karl is too busy going to track practice at Madison Heights field, so I guess it is up to Mom to do the writing…and Tresa also, but sometimes she is too busy playing with Debbie. So now I am going to say what keeps you too busy?

Monday 8 P.M.
Dear Larry:
Received your letter Friday, but didn’t have time to write to you over the weekend.
Saturday, Jannie H—– got married and they had their reception at the Polish Club, so Mrs. H—– asked me to help out, so I was as the club most of the day, and then in the evening as usual I went to bingo. Sunday, was Palm Sunday so we went to the 11:30 mass. Karl had to serve mass and Dad had to usher, so we got home around 1 o’clock, so I hurried and fixed breakfast and then went to the meeting at the Club. The we had to go to church again for a Bible Vigil. The kids had their religion fair and guess what, Tresa and Karl both won second place in their grades. And here I did’t think they would get anywhere.
Larry and Joanna… somewhere.

Dear Larry:
Not much to write about, but I thought I would drop a few lines anyway to let you know I am thinking of you. I went to the doctor today for my checkup. Its been a year since I had my operation. He said that I am ok, only I am gaining weight again and that is not so good. I just don’t have the will power to quit eating. It looks like I am going to start taking diet pills again.
