Dear Larry,

Just a few lines to let you know we got back from Cincinnati OK. We left this morning at 8 AM from Perfecto on Old 67 and left the car parked there. There [were] about 50 parents and children, including the “68 City Champs” for 3 years in a row.

It was a beautiful day, pleasant all along and never too hot. We got up at 5 and went to the 6 o’clock mass. Mother, Karl, Tresa and I. Carol went to Cincinnati yesterday with the girls’ Phys. Ed. class, sophomores. Left at 6 and got back at 11 PM. I felt fine all trip until we stopped at Batesville and the Falstaff bus drove in. Then my tongue began hanging out. I didn’t know any of the guys on the slacker bus, but they had plenty of lemonade, you can bet.

Thursday 8 P.M.

Dear Larry:

Well, here I am once again with not too much to write about. Tresa and Karl are watching “The Flying Nun” on TV and eating a bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup on it. One of Carol’s boyfriends just left. They are talking outside. Boy, she can’t get anything done. The phone rings every 5 minutes when she is home. Her and Joanna are always fussing. Joanna said that her friends can never get a hold of her because Carol is always on the phone. Joanna is working till 10 o’clock tonight and said she has a date after work with a hippy. She said that he has a long beard. So, I told her not to bring any hippies around here because I would be ashamed to have someone know that she goes out with guys like that. Whether she was kidding me or not, I don’t know.

1:45 P.M.

Dear Larry:

How are you? Ok, I hope. Here, everyone is mean as ever.

The mailman just went by and Tresa and Karl got your letters. They will be happy when they get home from school. I wouldn’t dare open [their] mail or they would get after me, so I will have to wait till they get home from school. Joanna wondered why you hadn’t written to her. She went to work at 7 this morning till 10:30, so now she is asleep and has to get up because she has to go back to work at 4 and work till 8 this evening. Her and I went to Mounds Mall and had dinner at MCL Cafeteria. We do that once in a while to get away. While there, we ran into Sara S—–, so she ate with us, and she was telling us that Mike D—– got married. Joanna said that she already knew it, but I was surprised. Joanna will write you more about it when she writes to you.

4:30 P.M.

Dear Larry:

Thought I would start writing you a letter while waiting for the family to come home. Dad isn’t home from work yet. I don’t know if he is working overtime or stopped at the club. I have supper all ready because I thought he would be home early because he usually works at the club on Monday nights.

Joanna went with Carol J—–, Carol went to a Pep meeting after school, and Karl has a track meet at Shenandoah school in Middletown, the school you worked at. And guess what? Tresa is delivering the papers tonight. They are breaking her in as Carol thinks she is too old to deliver papers and doesn’t want to be seen doing it. I don’t know what she is going to do for spending money.

Sunday Nite

9-22-68

Dear Larry,

Just got [through] taking a bath. Saved the water for you. (ha) Wish I could. Gave Karl a haircut earlier with the family kibitzing about me cutting his hair too short. Karl finally started crying. I finished him up with a nice job.

Woke up this morning at 0900. Picked Carol up at Kathy P—–’s house where they had a slumber party. Went to the 11:30 mass and Karl was a “cape” instead of a “sticky.” Dropped  mother off at the Pay-Less after mass and then picked her up. Had breakfast at 1300, bacon, sausage and eggs. Had some of your favorite “green tomatoes” or Chow Chow as it is called. I didn’t think it was hot enough so I put in a couple hot peppers in it a couple days ago, and boy was it ever good. We’ve got plenty of red tomatoes nowadays.

8:40 P.M. (My birthday)

Hi Larry:

How are you? I hope you are fine. I’m feeling real good, because it’s my birthday. I just love the skirt you got me. I’m going to wear it tomorrow, with a white long sleeve shell. It’s not a blue skirt, it’s green [plaid]. Well, here it is Saturday and I didn’t finish your letter yet. There really isn’t much going on around here, so there isn’t much to say. I can’t think of anything else, just that I got a blue shell, a jumper, and a dress, and a Kalogn [Kologne] kiddle from Joanna.

Wednesday 12 Noon

Dear Larry:

I thought that I would write a few lines to let you know all is well here and just hoping that you are the same.

As yet we haven’t had any mail from you this week, and I thought we would get a letter from you today, but the mailman just went by and I was disappointed.

Today here is a rainy day, and it looks like it will be raining all day. Karl is supposed to have a track meet after school, but it will probably be postponed.

I did my washing today and had to hang the clothes down [in] the basement.

Well, I am wondering what you are doing now. Everyone still on the mountains? Joanna and I are watching the news on T.V. I hate to watch the part of it about the war.

7:45 A.M.

Dear Larry:

The kids just left for school so I thought I would drop you a few lines instead of going back to bed like I usually do.

It is cloudy and windy outside today and some of the leaves are beginning to fall off the trees. Sure looks like fall weather here and before you know it, we will be having snow.

Dad went to work this morning after a week of vacation. He didn’t do much while he was off, only messed around out in the garden and he finally did plant some new shrubbery in front of the girls’ bedroom. He also planted a couple on each side of the sidewalk by the street. I will have dad take a picture of it and send it to you.

Sunday, September 15, 1968
9:30 A.M.

Dear Larry:

Here it is Sunday morning and as yet we haven’t been to church. We were supposed to go to the 8 o’clock mass because Karl had to serve, but Dad went to the club last night and forgot to come home, so we will have to go to a later mass. Karl went to the 8 with the D——’s. By the way, Karl capes now. He brings the water, wine, and the chalice to the priest.

Joanna stayed all night with Carol J—-. She is on her vacation this week, so she will probably do a lot of running around.

I don’t know if Carol told you or not, but the high school religion classes are going to be held on Sunday afternoon now instead of 9 in the morning, which makes it nice because now they are going to have mass at 5 in the evening, so she won’t have to get up early on Sunday mornings anymore.
