Valentine’s Day 1968

Posted on September 8th, 2010

In between all the letters from family there were other letters as well. There were two around Valentine’s Day 1968 that were from two of Larry’s friends from high school, we’re assuming. They both included a goofy card and one also included a letter. We thought they were interesting enough to include on the website. (click an image to view more detail)

Larry,

Hi, I’m sorry I haven’t written sooner but I just don’t have very much time to do anything anymore. I started to write you last week, but I never did get your letter done. Mom went to Chicago last week. Would you believe she left us here at home by ourselves? She left the car with Ronnie. This week some time she is going to go to Greencastle for 3 or 4 days. Well, anyway, how’s everything down there? Everything here is OK. I’ve got a cold but I’ll love. (Too bad.) Hey, do you have a cousin named Steve Rudolf? I met hime about 2 weeks ago. Well, Larry, I’ve got to be going now. I’ve got to get ready and go to Cooper’s so I hope you have a nice Valentine’s Day. Be good and write when you get a chance.

Love ya.
Diane.

These to letters were postmarked on the same day. That got me to thinking… I wonder what percentage of mail at the time was traveling to a person in the service. It had to be a lot.

I am pretty sure the “Cooper’s” that Diane is talking about in her letter is Coopers Sport Bowl! I know that Larry used to bowl on a league there.

These cards are pretty taboo for being 1968. I’m surprised.

Are you kidding, it was the 60′s MAN!

Hmmm, he mentioned a “Diane” as being “his girl” on a Christmas recording we listened to on the radio from the servicemen in Vietnam. I never forgot that. This sheds some light. I always wondered who Diane was.
