Photos – Dinner Time

Posted on August 4th, 2010

A typical dinner setting at the Rudolf household in the early to mid 1960′s with Charlie’s (the person taking the picture) seat empty and Amelia on the far right. In the back, from left to right, is Carol, Joanna and Tresa. Turning around at the front of the table is Karl and Larry.

Is that a little can of Flastaff that I see sitting on the counter?

I love how nobody is smiling.

Mother fixed a full course dinner and we ate together, every single night. Can you imagine when Larry was in Vietnam and his seat was empty, the heavy sadness Mother must’ve had in her heart? I remember her many times getting up from the table crying, and I asked why once, and Daddy said “she misses Larry and doesn’t like to see his empty seat”. That statement has stuck with me all these years because it was the first time I think I realized that he was in a very dangerous place.

I’ve said it over and over and over throughout the years – To have a strong Army, we had to have strong families right along with them. The young men are/were sacrificing their lives but we should never forget the sacrifices the families made, too.
I don’t even like the thought of my son getting drafted. Can’t imagine how I’d feel if he actually did.
