Photo – Charlie ‘Rolls His Own’

Charlie rolling his own cigarette. [probably early to mid 1960's]

“Roll and Falstaff — can’t envision Daddy without either. I used to run down to the neighborhood drug store (Mary’s on Forrest Terrace across from Uncle Tommy’s house … he would give me 5 cents extra to get myself some penny candy from the glass candy display) to get him Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco and OCB papers.” -Tresa

Were pre-rolled cigarettes not popular or not made yet? Why were people wasting their time rolling their own?

Daddy was “frugal” (one of his favorite words). I’m sure it was cheaper to roll your own. He also used to put his Falstaff in a sock to help keep it cold.

I find it interesting that they let a kid buy tobacco.

Same here. Can you imagine if a kid tried to do that today?
