Dear Larry:

I missed writing you yesterday as I was busy, you know my Saturdays. Joanna was off so she took me to Pay Less and took Karl to pay the paper bill and then to practice. When I got home I fixed some chili for supper and then I went to Bingo.

Charlie took Carol, Karl, Tresa and Barbara H—– to the Anderson and Madison Heights ball game. I guess it sure was a very exciting game, you wont like it very well but Anderson lost, the score was 75 to 72. I guess Karl was really mad at Barbara and Carol because they were for Madison Heights.

Dad said Anderson Had one of their usual good games .307, but Madison Heights had one of their best games .387 in a barn yard scrap (whatever that means. Ha.) but from the look of things, Anderson will beat them in the sectional.

This morning we went to church. Karl served mass so we had to go to the 8 o’clock mass and then we had coffee and rolls in the church basement.

I gave Rick P—– your address last night, so you’ll probably be hearing from him sometimes.

We are going to take Carol and Barbara to a movie, and then stop down Gen and Rays to sell Uncle Ray a ticket to communion breakfast in Feb. I will have to sign off for now, so until later.

Love Mom

(write)

Hope you are getting along ok.

I think Barbara might have been Carol’s school pal? And how dare Carol and Barbara root against the Anderson Indians?!

    • Haylee Teeple

Because they are Pirates but I thought Karl was a Pirate too? Right mom? Who is Barbara- do you remember what movie you were going to go see?

      • Cory

I would be extremely surprised if Carol remembered what movie she saw, but I would love to know.

For those of you interested, a barnyard scrap is a phrase used to call a very close game.

  • Tresa Hale

I loved coffee and doughnuts after mass! And Karl probably wasn’t a Pirate yet, so it was okay then to root for the school his big bro went to.

Okay youall! Barbara H. was my best friend. We were in 9th grade at Southside Middle School. I was 14 instead of 15 as previously stated. The year I went to middle school, they had re-arranged or changed districts for integration of minorities into suburb schools. At that time we were inner city & couldn’t attend the inner city school, so we had to attend the high school they had annexed a few years back, MHHS. Eventually, Carol, Karl, & Tresa became proud to be “PIRATES”. Karl wasn’t quite there yet because he was still in 6th grade & Daddy was an AHS staunch supporter & graduate in the ’30′s (I’m thinking ’35). And, Cory, the movie was my all time fave— “To Sir With Love” because Joanna had said how good it was! Just a personal note: I have been teaching at AHS, which, as of this year will be Anderson’s only high school. Many of the students from the only “other” city school, Highland, which closed this year, are able to choose which suburb schools (provided they are “accepted” ) that they want to attend. With “no child left behind” those w/ the financial & intellectual “means” can choose their schools! Interesting; from segregation to intergration back to segration! Sorry, but I had to make this political point!
