Hi Larry,

How is everything?  I didn’t write to you in about 2 weeks, so I thought I would take time out and write to you. Friday we got our pictures taken in school.  I wasn’t wearing my glasses because Anna Maria Case said it hurts your eyes. She didn’t wear hers. I will send you a picture of me when I get them. That same day, I was walking in school because it was snowing outside and we were playing [inside]. I saw Carol walking to lunch, and she talked to me and asked me how I smiled.  I showed her.  Friday in school, Mr. Strittmatter said we would have a Valentine’s party.  He said to get a Valentine’s card.  Teena P—– is going to make a box for the girls to put their cards in, and James P—– is going to make a box for the boys to put their cards in.  Then we will pick and see which card we will get.  Mommy is going to make some cupcakes.  We will have the party next Wednesday.  Carol isn’t going to get braces.

HAPPY Valentines Day!

Your sister,
Ellie Maes

    HAHA!

Loved that line, too! I bet Larry lit up with this letter. I’m sure any letter from his little sister was a treat but something so simple at a time when things were not so simple…
Had to put a big smile on his face and made him really think about what he was fighting for.

Thanks Munch! Your comment brings tears to these myopic eyes!
Probably the REAL reason I didn’t wear the glasses (my first pair of glasses) is because they were pink “cat glasses” with silver sparkles. I remember the first day I got them, walking into the St. Mary’s gym to watch Karl play in a basketball game for St. Ambrose. I was walking “behind” Daddy, very self-conscious. Funny thing is, my future husband was probably playing for the St. Mary’s team. He must not have gotten a good look at the nerdy little brat in the ugly glasses or he would never have married me! And yes, I was probably thrilled that Carol acknowledged my existence in the school hallway.

Awwwww…this is a really cute letter.

Would you expect anything less, Cory, from you Aunt Ellie Maes?

      • Cory

I’ll have to get back to you on that question…

        :)

Hey I think the letter was awesome, or a better word would be precious! Tresa was as almost as blind as a bat, so I bet this was the first time she really had ever seen a basketball game. Brought tears to my eyes too. And Cory, I love you!
