Dear Larry:

I didn’t get a chance to write to you yesterday as I was pretty busy with my washing, so I thought I had better get on the ball and drop you a few lines today. We had an early supper tonight. We had leftover vegetable soup and hot dogs. Dad wanted to eat early so he could take his usual nap and then go bowling. Yesterday, Dad brought home two big rolls of salami, so he said he went to Emge’s to get some slides for Holy Name meetings Thursday and while he was there he got the salami. I have him hell for buying so much so I froze some of it. I was telling Dad that you liked it and would probably like to eat some if you were here.

Joanna is working a split shift today and is getting off work at 8 this evening, The Chevy really comes in handy for her now. Carol just came in from her paper route and is fixing us some iced tea.

Last night Aunt Mary and I went shopping. I am planning on buying new drapes for the living room. It won’t be long till spring, so I am going to try to get a lot of my work done. I would like to have my living room painted, but if I do I will have to do it myself. I am looking around for some drapes for your’s and Karl’s room also. Maybe someday I may have my house fixed up. I don’t know whether I told you or not but we bought some new encyclopedias. We paid quite a bit for them, but as of yet, we didn’t get them. We even have a nice world globe which we already have. We are looking around for a book case to put the books in whenever we get them.

Larry, I guess Barbara H—–’s brother Ed left this morning for the service. Dad said he was talking to Mr. H—– and he told him that he is supposed to take his basic training at Fort Campbell, KY. Maybe you might run into him. Carol said Steve T—– and Tony S—– went also.

How is everything with you? Are they still keeping you busy? I am looking for a letter from you since you didn’t call Sunday. What do you do when you are off? Just think, it will be 5 weeks this Thurs. since you left. I sure hope that you get to come home after 8 wks. If not, maybe we can come to see you if you want us to.

Well, I am going to have to do the dishes so I will close for today, will write tomorrow.

Love Mom

P.S. Uncle Shike is in the hospital again for treatments. Uncle Deda and I are going to see him tomorrow.

Nothing goes together better than vegetable soup and hot dogs.

    • Munch

Just like chili and hotdogs or tomato soup and grilled cheese. Especially in February!

  • Cory

    Don’t forget salami. Yum-yum-yum!

  • DDeb Gruebmeyer

Cory would love the salami. Thats one of your favorites.

    • Cory

Mother, you obviously don’t know me very well. I haven’t had salami in over a year.

There was a car we had that had a small hole in the floorboard in the back seat and you could see the ground outside as Daddy drove down the road. Mother used to get her high heels stuck in it when she wore them to church on Sunday’s. I wonder if it was the good ole’ Chevy.

We bought the Encyclopaedia Brittanica’s from a door-to-door salesman. We felt like we had so much knowledge in those books. I doubt anyone buys them anymore with everything at your fingertips with the internet.

Did it ever cross anyones mind to maybe put a mat over that whole or maybe patch it? Seems like a simple fix to me!

We had a 1977 Chevy Caprice Malibu Classic station wagon when I was growing up. By the time my oldest brothers got the car, it had holes rusted through the floor as well.
One night, one of them and a few of their buddies were driving around and the guy in the back was drinking a beer. They got pulled over for speeding. He set his beer under the drivers seat and pulled the floor mat up to attempt to hide it. That’s when he noticed the hole, which was about the size of a baseball. The perfect size to set his can through on the road. So that’s what he did and then pulled the floor mat back over it. When the cop let them leave, he reached back through, picked up his can, and they drove off!

I think the hole in the floorboard was in the 1952 Studabaker.
