Dear Larry:

Here it is Sunday afternoon and the house is quiet. Tresa and I are the only ones at home. Joanna and Carol went to see “Valley of the Dolls.” Joanna saw it once and it must have been good because she went to see it again. Karl is at the park playing basketball and Dad, as usual, had a building committee meeting at his home, the Polish Club. I’ll sure be glad when they get that place finished then he wont have an excuse to go over there. Ha.

Well, Friday night I went to Bingo and guess what? I finally got to holler Bingo, twice. I got $28.00 but I had to give Aunt Helen $12.00 of it because one of the cards I had Bingo on was her card that she let me play for her. She always lets me play a couple of cards for her and we split. I played Bingo last night also (Sat night) but I didn’t win anything.

This morning we went to the 8 o’clock mass as Dad and Karl went to the Holy Name Communion breakfast. Uncles Harold, Ray, Ed, Vic and Rickie went also. Carol had to serve coffee to the men. I guess there were around 300 men there and the speaker was very good. We sent you the picture of the speaker, remember?

Oh, I forgot to tell you, Larry T—– and Johnnie J—– came over yesterday afternoon. Larry said he got a weekend pass, he looked good and he really has his hair cut short. I told him you probably look like he does. He wanted your address so I gave it to him. He said he didn’t like being in the service either. Johnnie J—– said there isn’t much for him to do because all of his friends are in the service. I told Larry T—– that if he gets more time at home for him to call me up and I’ll fix him some spaghetti and meatballs, and he said he sure would. They stayed for a while and talked to Joanna and then left.

Mr. Hays was here yesterday to pay his paper bill and he told Dad that John H—– was going to leave for the service this month (Feb). Maybe he might go to Ft. Campbell too.

It sure is pretty outside today. The sun is shining and the temperature is 45 degrees. Karl just came in from playing basketball and he said it wasn’t cold.

Well, I am wondering if you are going to call today and I am hoping you will have time to write to us today. Dad said he wasn’t going to write to you until we get some mail from you. He feels like you should write to us more often.

I’ll have to sign off for now so take care and we hope to get some mail soon.

Love Mom

Aunt Mary wants to know if you got her letter.

I wonder if there was a day where Charlie didn’t go to the Polish Club…

I’m actually getting kind of angry that Larry isn’t writing too!

Haha! “…at his home, the Polish Club.”

It’s only been about three weeks since the first letter, so that isn’t THAT long for Larry not to write many letters. I’m sure he probably could have written more, but he’s had a couple calls home, too, which is pretty decent for 3 weeks worth.

There probably wasn’t a day that Daddy didn’t go the the club. We would even go after church some Sundays after he would bartend Saturday night to help him clean the place, and we would get to keep any change we found on the floor. Us kids had lots of fun there too. We weren’t allowed in the actual bar area, so if we were going from the basement to the dance room, we had to sneak thru or walk around to the other door outside. We had many gatherings of good Polish folks. The women were excellent cooks and made lots of good galompke, crustchiki, pierogi (I’m sure these spellings are all wrong!).

Friday night was always Mother’s Bingo night, which meant I would spend an hour or so trying to wake Daddy up so he could make popcorn because Friday Night is Popcorn Night! We had an old burnt pan specifically for popcorn, and we would melt lots of bacon grease then put the kernels in the hot grease and cover with a lid … and just watch until it “grew teeth”. The smell of the popcorn popping still makes me salivate like a Pavlovian dog! And then we would buy Coke, and we kept it in the basement unlike refridgerators today stocked with all kinds of beverages. We would split a bottle with someone about once a week. It was such a treat to have it with the popcorn!

Popcorn popped in bacon grease. It just doesn’t get any better than that! Now you can get it in a convenient microwave bag!
