Dear Larry,

Thought I would write a few lines even though there is not much to write about. Hope you are ok. Here in Anderson it is really cold now. I took the fan out of the living room and put it down in the basement for the winter. Also I took the screens out of the doors and put the windows in and put the screen up in my storm window. I am not taking any chances because the kids may be out soaking windows since they are out of school tomorrow and Friday. Next week is Halloween and the kids only get to go out one night this year and that is Halloween night. In a way I am glad because I won’t have kids knocking on my door every 5 minutes.

Dear Larry:

Thought I would drop you a few lines while sitting under the dryer to get my hair dry.

Received your letter yesterday. Glad to hear that you got the box I sent you. Did you like the stuff I had in it? Let me know if there is anything else I could send you. Aunt Mary will probably be sending you a box in a few days. We are trying to send them so you won’t get them all at once. I am surprised that you didn’t get Uncle Ray’s box yet. They sent it to you before I sent mine. If I know Aunt Jennie she probably had quite a bit for you in that box. Maybe somebody stoled it. I know Uncle Ray will be disappointed. It cost him $2.50 to send the box and that is not including what was in it.

“How’s that sound with ya, cold beer?” – October 13, 1968

Posted on July 27th, 2011

13-OCT-68

Hi Rudy,

How ya been? Heard you’re out of the hills now. Talked to your ol’ man last week and he was mowing the yard. He said when you get home you can do it again. I wrote and told L.T., when everybody gets home I’ll buy a keg of booze and have a party. How’s that sound with ya, cold beer? Ok! Ok.

All I’m doing right now is eating a hamburger and watching the football game. I’ve been playing football every Sunday at Anderson College. Bet you sure would like to be here wouldn’t ya? We’d have a ball, you, Thomas, and myself. What a trio. Remember all the great times we’ve had in ol’ A-town? Still working at Guide [Lamp] and I hate it. Work and sleep, thats all I do because you guys aren’t home.

Hey, A.H.S. beat Madison Heights 27-6 and they’re first in the NCC and Marion tied. They play Marion next Friday and if they win they have the Conference. What ya think about that? Are ya still writing to Thomas? How about sending me some [?] of ya and some of those good ones. Ok? Ok!

Well I have to close for now so write back like ya say ya will and do it after reading this letter. Ok!

Your Buddy,

JJ

Dear Larry,

Just got thru reading the paper and thought I’d drop you a line. Mother’s at bingo and Karl and Tresa are asleep. We’re going to the 8:00 o’clock mass in the morning as Karl has to serve. I suppose now you have a chance to attend mass. What are you stationed at, an outpost or a very large base? How’s your food now and sanitary conditions? A little better I hope. I read in the paper the other day where the 82nd, some troopers, came across a cache of V.C. arms and ammunitions and T.N.T. 9 miles W.N.W. of Saigon.

Thurs. – 9:10 PM

Dear Larry:

Here I am again with a few lines to let you know we are thinking of you. I wrote to you yesterday and was supposed to put in some paper clippings and I already sealed the letter and forgot all about it. I’ll try to remember to put some in this letter.

I finally broke down and went over to see Joanna and Carol’s apt. Joanna came over this evening and took me over to see it. Sure is nice, but why wouldn’t it be? It costs enough. Joanna was telling me that she got paid today and only has $1.00 left. She will have to give a lot up to live in a place like that. But I made up my mind, I am not going to say anything and let her find out for herself.

Dear Larry,

Here it is Sun. nite. Mother and all the kids are in bed, asleep, I think, and I’m sitting here “riting”. Larry, you know, I could just say there is no more to “rite” about and just say goodbye as your letters go. First of all, you don’t spell “yet” as “yeat” and you don’t spell “theirs” as “theres”. Larry, I hate like hell to give you a lot of hell about your writing, but you have to try to rite (write), do you see what I mean? After all, Larry, you know you’ll have two years of college coming from your G.I. Bill of Rights when you get (geat) out and you might want to take advantage of it and then again, you might not. Who am I to say what you’re going to do? But, whatever you are going to do sure can be helped rite now when you have time on your hands. Larry, you don’t have to have a good education or be exceptionally smart to get (geat) a good job. You just have to be with it, the simple things, like simple spelling, punctuation and simple phraseology. Larry, if I’m getting too deep for you, turn me off.

Time – 8:45 A.M.

Dear Larry:

Got up a few minutes ago. I could have slept longer since it is a Saturday, but Tresa wouldn’t let me. I just got through counting out Karl’s money to pay his paper bill, so he will be going to town in a few minutes to pay it.

We had heavy frost here this morning and it is pretty cold out. We have to have the heat on in the house. Last night dad went out in the garden and picked the last of the tomatoes, hot peppers and cucumbers so they wouldn’t freeze. After this, everything will be droopy and the leaves will really be falling off the trees. Just think, I won’t have to be mowing the grass anymore. I will probably start shoveling snow before long.
